WIN! Congress strips funds from NAFTA trucks pilot program

Another win for safety on the nation's roads, thanks to you!

Before the politicians left for the holiday, Congress passed an omnibus spending bill -- which included a provision both houses of Congress passed months ago, to prohibit any funds from going to the Department of Transportation's reckless "pilot program" allowing selected Mexico-based trucks full access to U.S. roads.

President Bush signed the omnibus spending bill into law this week.. and that includes the section killing funding for the NAFTA trucks pilot program!

This win was only made possible by people just like YOU.  So many Public Citizen members and activists really stepped up to the plate and sent thousands of letters to the Hill, demanding that Congress put a stop to the reckless "pilot project" that would have put us all at increased risk of death and injury on the nation's roads.

Is this the last word on NAFTA trucks?  Bush pushed ahead with the NAFTA trucks pilot program despite several clear messages from Congress that safety must come first -- and it's always possible the Bush administration will find some other way to keep trying this dangerous idea.

So we at Public Citizen are not going to sit idly by -- we plan on hitting the ground running in January, to make sure this reckless folly truly does come to an end. And we will, as always, let you know when there's a need for the public to act.
